Massive Balloon Anniversary Cake

Buddy the clown attempted a world record on July 22, 2011.

The crew start on a humid morning at 9am on July 22nd, 2011. The frame to support this towering balloon birthday cake was already set up to hold the 7,000 balloons. And this 20x20ft structure was set to be the largest continuously connected balloon sculpture in the world. With a towering 16ft candle and the base standing a whopping 8.5ft tall. This cake was to commemorate Lamoille County Field Days 50th anniversary.

The heat index was 103 with tempatures topping 94 degrees, Buddy and his crew were blowing up and connecting the 21 balloon columns that surrounded the frame. Frequent runs into the open field to save balloons that were hit by random gusts of wind; added to the fun atmosphere of the days events. With fifteen volunteers from Central  Vermont  the balloon sculpture was raised from 2 boxes of empty latex spheres into a figure that the whole crew could even work inside of.. Fit with even a balloon covered roof and gold balloon trim the crew stopped at 7pm with 80% of the masterpiece finished. Pops were inevitable on the hottest day of the year, and a thunder, wind and rain shower swept through at 4 am to implode a heavy amount of the cake's icing.

When Buddy arrived early the next morning, to his dismay he found that there had been around 3,000 mini-explosions throughout the night leaving the cake with many holes. Buddy had high hopes however and continued to plug away until he found he had not enough balloons to replace the damage that the weather had done. Buddy wants to send out a big thank you to 4 Corners Farm and Windy Ridge Apple Orchard who supported the sculpture along with Lammoille County Field Days. Unfortunately Buddy could not complete this world record for the fair, but Buddy is sure to make more attempts in the future. This time though, it will be inside!

Thank you Lamoille County Field days for your support throughout the entire fair and happy 50th anniversary! You may not have had a cake but you sure had a clown!

Some of the bigger stuff that Buddy has made are down here!
